Abstract In this two-part article, we systematically examine the effects of natural amenities on in-migration by looking at recent evidence from the U.S. Lake State of Wisconsin. In Part I, we develop a comprehensive review of the driving factors behind migration and generate indices using principal factor analysis and spatial overlay methods with initial models specified using ordinary least squares regressions. In Part II, we model the migration problem by considering spatial lag and error dependence simultaneously and identifying the optimal spatial weights matrix among a comprehensive array of possible specifications. Results suggest in-migration is determined jointly by demographic, social, economic, geographic, political and cultural forces within the context of varying natural amenity characteristics. Resume Dans cet article en deux parties, nous examinons systematiquement les effets des amenagements naturels sur l'immigration. Dans la lere partie, nous abordons cette question en fonction de la litterature critique et nous procedons a un resume complet des facteurs moteurs de la migration. Empiriquement nous prenons en compte les donnees recentes de l'Etat americain du Wisconsin au niveau de la petite division administrative. Nous tenons compte des caracteristiques demographiques, des conditions socioeconomiques, de l'accessibilite des transports et de l'amenagement du territoire. En outre, nous developpons des indices en utilisant une analyse des principaux facteurs et les methodes de superposition spatiale avec des modeles initiaux specifies en utilisant une analyse ordinaire de regression par les moindres carres. Dans la 2eme partie, nous reconnaissons la nature spatialement explicite du probleme et la complexite empirique correspondante qui fait que la reconnaissance de > compte dans la methode d'analyse regionale. Ainsi, pour une meme specification de zone geographique, nous diagnostiquons nos premiers modeles regionaux en fonction de la presence de l'espace auto-structures d'erreur correles (spatially auto-correlated error structures). Cela nous amene a adapter notre approche a la modelisation du probleme des migrations considerant a la fois le decalage spatial et la dependance d'erreur (error dependence) simultanement. En outre, nous utilisons une approche fondee sur les donnees pour identifier les poids optimaux matrice spatiale (spatial weights matrix) au sein d'un ensemble complet de specifications possibles. Les resultats suggerent que la migration intra- regionale est en effet un processus spatial qui necessite des approches a l'analyse regionale spatialement specifiques. La modelisation spatiale suggere que la migration est determinee conjointement par des forces demographiques, sociales, economiques, geographiques, politiques et culturelles dans le contexte de caracteristiques d'amenites naturelles variables. Les effets de la migration des amenites naturelles varient selon l'inclusion ou l'exclusion de nombreuses forces contextuelles qui agissent pour influencer le changement de la population rurale.
