Abstract
Les premiers pas de 1 'Eglise dans les rgions orientales de l' Amrique du nord Luca CODIGNOLA Les historiens et historiennes connaissent assez ben I'histoire des premiers pas de I'glise catholique en Amrique du Nord, c'est a dire de la rgion qui correspond aujourd'hui au Canada de l'est et a la Nouvelle-Angleterre, pendant la premiere moiti du XVIIe siecle. Plusieurs glises, missions et paroisses ont fait l'objct d'tudes monographiques de qualit, tandis qu'on a consacr un nombre imposant de biographies aux missionnaires et aux ecclsiastiques les plus importants. Nous avons donc une bonne connaissance de la hirarchie institutionnelle, des efforts rnissionnaires aupres des Autochtones, de la pit populaire des habitants de la Nouvelle-France et de I 'influence du Saint-Siege sur les dveloppements nord-amricains l. A partir de ce vaste ventail historiographique, prsent ici dan s les grandes lignes, il nous para't possible de dresser un bilan de connaissances en ce domain. Le choix du cadre chronologique mrite une explication. La fin du Concile de Trent, en 1563, doit etre considere comme le commencement d'une Rforme catholique et d'une consquente rorganisation des activits missionnaires qui permit, entre autres, les dbuts de la colonisation du Canada et surtout la survie de la colonie pendant toute sa premiere priode.
