Les premiers pas de 1 'Eglise dans les régions orientales de l' Amérique du nord Luca CODIGNOLA Les historiens et historiennes connaissent assez ben I'histoire des premiers pas de I'Église catholique en Amérique du Nord, c'est a dire de la région qui correspond aujourd'hui au Canada de l'est et a la Nouvelle-Angleterre, pendant la premiere moitié du XVIIe siecle.Plusieurs églises, missions et paroisses ont fait l'objct d'études monographiques de qualité, tandis qu'on a consacré un nombre imposant de biographies aux missionnaires et aux ecclésiastiques les plus importants.Nous avons donc une bonne connaissance de la hiérarchie institutionnelle, des efforts rnissionnaires aupres des Autochtones, de la piété populaire des habitants de la Nouvelle-France et de I 'influence du Saint-Siege sur les développements nord-américains l.A partir de ce vaste éventail historiographique, présenté ici dan s les grandes lignes, il nous paraí't possible de dresser un bilan de connaissances en ce domain.Le choix du cadre chronologique mérite une explication.La fin du Concile de Trent, en 1563, doit etre considerée comme le commencement d'une Réforme catholique et d'une conséquente réorganisation des activités missionnaires qui permit, entre autres, les débuts de la colonisation du Canada et surtout la survie de la colonie pendant toute sa premiere période.Le capucin fran<;ais Pacifique de Provins (René de L'Escale), un missionnaire quelque peu visionnaire, mais avec une longue 1.
