Dans cette contribution, les auteurs mobilisent les concepts centraux d’une théorie des dispositifs pour s’intéresser à la formation en alternance. Ils insistent sur sa nature ensemblière à travers laquelle des dispositions idéelles, fonctionnelles et actorielles font système. Ils peuvent ainsi contribuer à une réflexion capable de rendre intelligibles les processus fondamentaux dont est porteur ce type de formations. L’alternance devient ici une propriété émergente en relation avec certains vécus en formation, et non forcément la caractéristique a priori d’un dispositif. Dans cet article, ils revisitent tout d’abord la notion de dispositif. Ensuite, ils posent les bases d’un modèle de compréhension des dispositifs de formation, ce qui leur permet, enfin, de revenir à la spécificité des dispositifs de formation alternée et d’illustrer empiriquement leur propos avec deux études de cas issues de l’enseignement universitaire français.
