Cet article interroge la condition de nos usages partagés de la catégorie musicale Musique du monde. En étudiant de manière analytique son implication dans les activités de deux grandes enseignes de la distribution de disques, la FNAC et le Virgin Megastore, nous glisserons d’un questionnement relatif à la classification d’un ensemble de disques proposés à la vente à un questionnement concernant l’implication de catégories musicales dans la production et l’expression de nos façons de vivre la musique. Plus précisément, cet article s’attache à l’occurrence et à l’usage de la catégorie Musique du monde au sein des rayons des magasins bordelais de ces enseignes. Ces rayonnages sont étudiés comme des espaces de mise en scène de la diversité musicale. L’examen de leur organisation nous conduira à problématiser l’objet de ce classement de disques et les conditions de son appropriation, pour engager en conclusion une réflexion sur l’expression et la connaissance de nos « goûts musicaux ».
