Abstract
RésuméAlors que les grands prédateurs et les mammifères ont fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches dans les Amériques, les petits animaux ont été négligés. Cette situation paraît d’autant plus paradoxale que les régions arctiques figurent parmi les plus riches pour leurs populations d’insectes et que ces derniers occupent une place primordiale dans les traditions chamaniques. À partir des travaux contemporains sur l’animisme, nous proposerons de montrer comment les insectes et autres bestioles, que les Inuit désignent par le terme qupirruit, demeurent encore aujourd’hui des opérateurs majeurs dans les domaines ontologique et cosmologique. Ce point est esquissé avec quelques exemples nord-américains. Contrairement à ce qui prévaut en Amazonie, leur rôle dans le chamanisme arctique tient moins à des questions de substance qu’à leur capacité à changer d’échelle, à se transformer et à se déplacer.
