Abstract Neurotrophic factors, such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and cytokines, are involved in nociceptive and neuropathic pain conditions, such as diabetic peripheral neuropathies. It is also observed that intramuscular injection of human NGF at a concentration equivalent to that which resulted in mechanical sensitization in humans caused a significant decrease in the mechanical threshold of rat masseter muscle afferent fibers. This article focuses on NGF and tumor necrosis factor alpha and their role in the mechanisms of neuropathic and nociceptive pain.
