Le transindochinois, premier et unique réseau du chemin de fer en ex-Indochine française, est indissociable de son initiateur, Paul Doumer, gouverneur de l’Indochine de 1897 à 1902. Lancé dès son arrivée en Indochine, ce projet est mis en avant par Paul Doumer qui ambitionne de rendre cette colonie à la fois rentable et stratégique. Le transindochinois dont une ligne de pénétration en Chine, faisait ainsi partie des travaux publics nécessaires, voire prioritaires à mettre en place. C’est Paul Doumer qui a donné les assises financières durables et fixé les tracés définitifs du réseau. Cette expérience coloniale marquait indiscutablement sa carrière politique, celle d’un homme d’État hors norme, devenu en 1931 Président français.
