Abstract
The seniority systems that govern the bestowal of several of the advantages fought for in the unionized labour environment have differentiated effects on men and women. Although temporary preferential measures might be put in place to combat the effect of the systemic discrimination in certain hiring practices, seniority systems cannot be partially or temporarily suspended for the same reasons. Several factors stand in the way of adopting a mainstreaming approach with respect to seniority, and this leads us to the area of union culture and present-day transformations in the labour market.
