Abstract
Le présent article porte sur les défis qu'a dû relever le secteur de la fabrication au cours du dernier demi-siècle, en examinant à la fois les résultats de long terme et ceux de court terme. Pour commencer, nous cherchons à savoir s'il existe des preuves que la fabrication a connu un déclin de longue durée. Nous étudions aussi les réactions de l'industrie, durant la période étudiée, à des chocs particuliers résultant des fluctuations du taux de change, de la libéralisation du commerce et des cycles économiques. Nous dégageons peu de preuves d'un déclin de longue durée. Nous décrivons plutôt comment le secteur de la fabrication s'est adapté aux divers défis, que ceux-ci aient eu pour cause des changements de la demande déclenchés par les cycles économiques, des variations des prix relatifs associées aux chocs de taux de change ou des modifications des régimes tarifaires.
