Abstract
Dans l’oeuvre romanesque de Marcel Aymé, l’aventure fonctionne comme le mécanisme qui permet à l’auteur de confronter la vie quotidienne de ses personnages avec une autre vie possible, une vie nouvelle tantôt recherchée — en vain —comme un moyen d’échapper à la médiocrité de l’existence, tantôt survenue, au contraire, comme une encombrante expérience d’ordre surnaturel. La philosophie qui se dégage de cette confrontation de vies parallèles tient en même temps de la résignation et du scepticisme : l’homme ne peut ou, respectivement, ne veut se soustraire à sa condition. La vie quotidienne constitue un acquis trop précieux pour le compromettre dans des projets évanescents, susceptibles d’élargir la casuistique déjà instable de l’imprévu. Ainsi, le plus sage est de ne pas désirer ce qu’on n’est pas ou ce qu’on n’est plus, de s’accommoder de son destin, car en fin de compte, on n’y peut rien changer. Une telle attitude est propre à Marcel Aymé, mais peut-être aussi au moment historique où il écrit, un temps où l’on aspire non pas à vivre d’heureuses aventures, mais à vivre tout court.
