À l’aide d’observations et d’entrevues collectées entre 2006 et 2008 auprès de converties à l’islam en France et au Québec, nous discutons le pouvoir de représentation de l’islam que la position d’intermédiaire confère aux nouveaux musulmans. Soumis à la contrainte d’incarner la cohérence d’identités considérées par les deux groupes d’appartenance comme incompatibles, ils contribuent à l’élaboration d’une troisième voie alternative aux modèles dominants de leurs sociétés d’origine et d’adoption. Alors que ces acteurs constituent les figures de proue d’un islam hybride adapté au contexte local, ils appuient leur légitimité sur une vision du savoir qui retravaille le discours sur l’ethnicité et produit de nouveaux rapports de pouvoir avec les musulmans nés dans l’islam. En soulignant que cette structure inspire une forme d’orientalisme, nous soutenons que les passeurs de frontières tiennent en réalité le groupe minoritaire captif de la représentation qu’ils construisent et diffusent, en vertu des enjeux qui sont les leurs.
