Abstract
A l’inverse des femmes, les ingénieurs masculins connaissent une réussite professionnelle d’autant plus remarquable qu’ils ont une descendance nombreuse. A partir d’un examen de la littérature portant sur les hommes et sur les ingénieurs la discussion est menée sur les principales hypothèses que suggère ce constat. Ces pères à qui sourit la fortune professionnelle sont-ils des Breadwinners au sens parsonien, soutenus dans leur carrière par une épouse bien dotée et dont la responsabilité d’enfants à nourrir stimule un zèle au travail apprécié par les employeurs, ou des ingénieurs plus conformes que les autres aux représentations dominantes de la virilité ? Au terme de l’analyse, appuyée sur diverses enquêtes statistiques sur les ingénieurs diplômés et cadres, il est difficile de trancher entre ces diverses figures, tout comme sur celle, plus étonnante, des ingénieurs célibataires et sans enfant, aux carrières nettement moins brillantes.
