Abstract
The entry shows the influence of social class, as an economic relationship widely associated with wealth and occupation, upon forms of sport. It focuses in particular upon participation, but also looks at the historical manifestation of class and status differences in historical contexts such as the Colosseum in ancient Rome, and the formative phase of the growth of modern sports in industrializing Britain. Neo‐Marxist scholarship and the work of Bourdieu are used to discuss class‐influenced habitus and cultural reproduction in sport cultures, and the patterns of class‐based participation in contemporary England are summarized. In conclusion, and with reference to studies in Norway, Finland, and Canada, it is argued that class habitus and cultural capital continue to be major determinants of everyday practices and cultural institutions such as sport.
