Abstract
Depuis une vingtaine d’années et dans la plupart des pays, on peut observer une multitude d’initiatives de la société civile dans le domaine du développement économique et du développement social, très souvent avec l’aide ou le soutien de l’État. Ces initiatives et ces expérimentations socioéconomiques qui se veulent différentes aussi bien du secteur public que du secteur privé, sont de plus en plus reconnues comme pouvant réussir là où ces deux secteurs ont échoué isolément ou même en tandem. Dans cet article, nous esquissons à grands traits un aperçu de l’économie sociale au Canada, en s’en tenant à ce que plusieurs appellent la nouvelle économie sociale qui s’est manifestée à partir des années 1970, mais surtout durant les années 1980. Nous donnons également un aperçu des définitions et approches utilisées par les chercheurs pour rendre compte de cette nouvelle réalité.
