Abstract
Cet article explore les dimensions sociales et culturelles de la compensation monétaire dans deux cas de restitution dans la région du Cap Occidental (Western Cape), se concentrant sur la manière dont les demandeurs de réparations pour la perte de leurs droits fonciers ont interprété le processus. Quand on leur offrait de l’argent, les demandeurs le chargeaient de sens, de manière créatrice, sans limites de temps, l’associant aux notions passées et présentes de “foyer” et “d’appartenance.” Mais, du fait de sa nature même, l’argent étant un signifiant relativement vide de sens, l’indemnité était soumise à réinterprétations et contestation de son sens exact, ce qui menait à d’autres conflits et à une plus grande frustration. L’article montre que l’on ne peut séparer une bonne compréhension des indemnités en espèces et de ses effets sur la guérison et la réconciliation, d’une analyse des circonstances locales qui servent de cadre au processus de réconciliation.
