Le vieillissement est un thème majeur et mal connu de l’oeuvre de Simone de Beauvoir. Elle y revient en permanence dans tous ses écrits, y consacre à titre principal certains de ses ouvrages (dont La vieillesse ). Son mérite est de réintégrer les femmes dans une analyse globale de la vieillesse qui en considère tous les aspects, biologiques, sociaux, psychologiques… Simone de Beauvoir évalue les effets de la vieillesse communs aux deux sexes et la situation particulière à chacun. Pour qu’il n’y ait plus de personnes exclues, elle appelle à modifier les rapports sociaux de sexe et entre les générations : « changer la vie ».
