Au Québec, le retard de la première transition démographique peut être mis en rapport avec la lenteur initiale des autres transformations socio-économiques et culturelles. L'écart de fécondité entre le Québec (5,3 enfants par femme) et l'Ontario (3,2) est particulièremenit marqué en 1921. Par la suite, la baisse de la fécondité est globalement plus rapide au Québec, où le phénomène du baby-boom est moins important, de sorte qu'en 1960 les deux provinces atteignent ensemble le chiffre de 3,8 enfants par femme. Les années 1960 voient culminer la première transition au Québec, alors mêrne que s'engage la deuxième. Celle-ci, en une décennie, portera la fécondité de 3,76 (1960) à 1,97 enfant par femme (1970). Elle comporte surtout un assouplissement des formes conjugales, associé à la fréquence du divorce et de la cohabitation. Si la cohabitation est particilièrement marquée au Québec, une plus forte proportion des naissances a lieu aux âges plus avancés en Ontario. Les niveaux de fécondité du Québec et de l'Ontario sont similaires en 1996 : 1,56 enfant par femme.
