Abstract

Ce texte présente des données inédites concernant l’un des plus importants auxiliaires des chamanes kaingangs contemporains, une figure énigmatique connue dans le sud du Brésil sous le nom de São João Maria ou « o Monge », le moine. Il s'agit du moine itinérant d’origine italienne, Giovanni Maria de Agostini, qui a parcouru les Amériques de 1838 à 1869. Bien qu’il n’ait jamais été canonisé, ce dernier est considéré comme étant l'un des plus importants saints du catholicisme populaire régional. De plus, il est associé par les historiens au mouvement messianique « Guerra do Contestado », un soulèvement populaire qui s'est déroulé dans le sud du Brésil de 1912 à 1916. Les témoignages recueillis auprès des Kaingangs sont ici comparés avec des récits provenant du Nouveau-Mexique et du Pérou, récits qui se sont formés de façon indépendante après la rencontre avec Agostini.
