Abstract
Le voyage que Weber effectue aux Etats-Unis en 1904 est determinant a plus d’un titre : non seulement les observations et les rencontres qu’il va y faire vont lui permettre de developper ses intuitions sur le role du protestantisme dans l’evolution du capitalisme, mais elles vont egalement lui donner l’occasion de nourrir sa perspective sur le desenchantement de la civilisation bourgeoise. C’est en grande partie dans l’ombre du malaise de la modernite europeenne qu’il saisit l’originalite du Nouveau Monde : a travers sa lecture de l’Amerique, il apprehende les revers d’un progres et d’une individualite coupes de ses referents religieux.
