Abstract
Comment le tourisme influence-t-il le transport ? Comment le transport influence-t-il le tourisme ? Comment démarre et comment se développe la coopération entre le tourisme et l’automobile dans la première moitié du XXe siècle ? Cet article entend montrer l’évolution des liens entre le tourisme et le transport en s’appuyant sur le cas de la province de Québec entre 1906 et 1936. Ce territoire constitue un exemple pertinent car durant cette période, le tourisme et la voirie se rejoignent pour former une politique étatique. Il s’agit d’en comprendre les origines, l’évolution et les conséquences que cela a pu avoir sur ces deux thématiques que sont le tourisme et le transport automobile. À partir d’une recherche en histoire, l’article montre que les actions entreprises par les clubs automobiles de la province ont incité à l’essor du tourisme automobile. Puis, nous verrons que la pression associative amène l’État à participer activement au phénomène en devenant un des acteurs principaux de son élaboration à travers le ministère de la Voirie. La conclusion ouvre la réflexion sur l’historiographie.
