Grâce aux recherches en archives et sur des sites archéologiques du XVI e siècle, la présence européenne ancienne dans le Nord-Est de l’Amérique du Nord est maintenant mieux documentée. Il devient donc possible d’établir des liens entre les assemblages d’objets européens de cette période mis au jour sur les sites amérindiens de l’intérieur du continent et de peut-être mieux comprendre comment l’arrivée de ces nouveaux venus et leur rencontre avec les Autochtones auraient pu affecter les populations en place. Venant s’ajouter aux récits de voyage et autres documents d’archives, ces vestiges matériels, malgré les limites qu’ils présentent, nous donnent un point de vue généré par les Amérindiens eux-mêmes qui peut être mis en rapport avec les textes européens. Ainsi, cet essai tente de mesurer l’intensité et l’ampleur de ces premiers contacts et de déterminer les principaux événements qui les ont entourés.
