Tourism Development and Environmental Coast Laws in Senegal: The Case of the Petite Côte

Abstract
Over the past twenty years, much of the natural coastline of the Petite Cote in Senegal has been destroyed by the building of sophisticated facilities for tourists. This area was formerly occupied by numerous simple weekend accommodations. Today, however, these have all been replaced by luxurious holiday villas of an international standard that cater mainly to the affluent from Dakar and to foreign expatriates, largely from France and Lebanon. The coast itself is now dominated by more than 30 large hotels, heavily concentrated in the Sali seaside resort area. This situation has led to the radical transformation of the Petite Cote, now characterized by rapidly expanding urbanization. This paper discusses the nexus between tourism and environment on the Senegalese Petite Cote.
