Abstract
When I was invited to contribute a chapter to this book, I found myself thinking that it would be an ideal opportunity to share what I have learned from my family, parents, grandparents, Elders and other teachers. I was thrilled that I would be sharing ideas and knowledge from my own Nation (a rare opportunity), and after over two decades of academia, a unique chance to ’ground-truth‘ my ideas. As an Anishinaabe and professor of Geography and Aboriginal Studies, the topic of Anishinaabe knowledge has occupied my attention daily, on both professional and personal levels, for much of my life. AEK (Anishinaabe environmental knowledge) is becoming ever more important as we seek to regain control over own territories and our own lives by revitalizing our traditions, values and worldviews.
