Siegfried J. Schmidt hat in vielen akademischen Disziplinen Akzente gesetzt. 1971 wird Schmidt auf einen Lehrstuhl für Texttheorie an der Universität Bielefeld berufen, dort, nur zwei Jahre später, wechselt er auf einen Lehrstuhl für Literaturtheorie. 1979 folgt der Ruf auf einen Lehrstuhl für Germanistik und Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Siegen. Dann, 1997, der Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Kommunikationstheorie und Medienkultur am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft der Universität Münster. Davor, daneben und danach zahlreiche Abstecher und Expeditionen: Kunst, Poesie, Ausstellungen, Lesungen und Gastprofessuren, unter anderem in Hiroshima, Edmonton, Melbourne, Innsbruck, Lublin, Wien, Pisa und Klagenfurt. Bereits diese knappe berufsbiografische Skizze zeigt sehr deutlich, mit wie viel Engagement Siegfried J. Schmidt Wissenschaft betreibt, mit wie viel Bekenntnis zur Interdisziplinarität und mit wie viel Leidenschaft für den Perspektivenwechsel – nicht nur zwischen den akademischen Disziplinen, sondern in einem weit umfassenderen Sinn zwischen Wissenschaft, Poesie, Kunst und Kultur.
