Déglaciation et évolution des lacs proglaciaires post-Algonquin et Barlow au Témiscamingue, Québec et Ontario

L'inventaire des stries et des dépôts de contact glaciaire dans la région située entre North Bay, Ontario et le 48°N a permis une reconstitution détaillée de la configuration de la marge glaciaire à son retrait. De même il a été établi que le complexe fluvioglaciaire formé par les moraines d'Harricana et du lac McConnell se prolonge jusqu'au lac Nipissing; de là il se joint probablement au système de déversoirs et de plaines d'épandage qui se termine au lac Simcoe, en Ontario. La répartition de 43 datations au radiocarbone à l'ensemble du territoire appuie ce modèle de déglaciation. L'évolution des lacs post-Algonquin et Barlow, qui a suivi cette déglaciation, a été reconstituée à partir de la position géographique et de l'altitude de 52 limites maximales d'inondation et de la répartition de 69 lacs porteurs et de 39 lacs non porteurs d'organismes biologiques indicateurs de submersion glaciolacustre. Les phases lacustres reliées aux exutoires de South River, Fossmill, Sobie-Guillemette, lac Mink et la « Early Mattawa-outlet phase », d'auteurs précédents, ont été modifiées et adaptées aux nouvelles données. Une nouvelle interprétation, basée sur la présence d'un barrage morainique qui aurait retenu les eaux du lac Barlow dans la région d'Opemika Narrows et de Témiscaming, au Québec, a conduit à proposer les phases lacustres associées aux exutoires de Deux-Rivières-Bissett Creek (haut niveau), Deux-Rivières-Bissett Creek (Kipawa), Kipawa-Moraine du lac McConnell phase I1 et de Kipawa-Moraine du lac McConnell, phase II. La présence d'indicateurs biologiques dans les lacs Waterloo et Windigo, en Ontario, indique qu'un plan d'eau d'une altitude d'au moins 300 m a envahi la vallée de la rivière des Outaouais, à l'est de Mattawa, de façon progressive de l'ouest vers l'est.
