Abstract In this article, natural composites are defined as vegetal or lignocellulosic fiber‐reinforced polymer composites. Several surface modification methods appropriate for vegetal fibers are discussed in three broad categories: physical or chemical methods designed to improve water repellence, improve adhesion to a polymer matrix, and methods for increasing thermal and fire resistance. A brief outlook of alternative surface modification methods for vegetal fibers is also presented. A number of surface modification methods may be used with synergistic effect. However, a delicate balance exists between technological feasibility and cost, whatever this may be. Ideally, selecting a useful method to modify the performance of vegetal fibers is a holistic process that requires of balancing materials' properties, with economic and environmental considerations.
