En el marco de la economia politica internacional del regionalismo, las relaciones entre Canada y la Union Europea se han visto influenciadas por la participacion de Canada en el Tratado de Libre Comercio de America del Norte (TLCAN) desde 1992. Aunque los datos empiricos son insuficientes para determinar con precision como afectaron a las relaciones mutuas los respectivos procesos de integracion regional, es constatable a lo largo de la decada la perdida de intensidad de los intercambios comerciales bilaterales, al tiempo que las inversiones canadienses en Europa y las europeas en Canada aumentaron ininterrumpidamente. Lo limitado de estas relaciones bilaterales se explica en parte por la importancia secundaria del mercado europeo para Canada en comparacion con el mercado estadounidense; pero si las relaciones economicas entre Canada y la UE no se han intensificado en mayor medida ha sido simplemente por falta de voluntad por parte de los respectivos responsables politicos. Sin embargo, desde 1 996 se han desarrollado los mecanismos de cooperacion institucionalizada que permitirian la intensificacion de las relaciones politicas y economicas UE-Canada.
