Arrimées à de nouvelles tendances culturelles marquées par l’individualisme qualitatif et la quête de réalisation de soi, ainsi qu’au regain de l’idéologie libérale du libre marché, les nouvelles normes et pratiques managériales modifient en profondeur les rapports de pouvoir et de domination au travail. Elles mettent l’accent sur des modes novateurs de mobilisation des subjectivités individuelles, de contrôles fondés sur l’autonomie responsable et la promotion de procédures de négociation des normes, le développement de soi par le développement des compétences ainsi que l’affirmation identitaire par la gestion symbolique de la reconnaissance. Elles s’inscrivent dans un nouvel esprit du capitalisme qui instrumentalise les besoins de réalisation de soi, un nouvel esprit où se conjuguent faits de culture et nouvelles logiques structurelles aux fins de la valorisation du capital.
