Abstract

Étant donné la faiblesse de l’indice conjoncturel de fécondité dans la Communauté autonome du Pays Basque (CAPB), on pourrait s’attendre à une diminution de la pratique de la langue basque puisque la population « d’origine », porteuse de l’identité culturelle basque, vieillit et risque à terme de diminuer. Mais, dans les faits, on assiste à un essor de la langue, avec à la fois une hausse de la proportion d’habitants qui comprennent le basque, et une augmentation de la part de ceux qui ont une bonne connaissance de cette langue. Dans le présent travail, nous identifions les facteurs explicatifs de cette évolution en analysant les rôles respectifs de l’école et de la famille dans l’apprentissage de la langue basque. Ainsi, on observe une assimilation de la langue basque par les non-natifs de la communauté et l’importance du rôle de l’école dans cet apprentissage. Enfin, un travail de projections de la connaissance de la langue basque dans la CAPB à l’horizon des années 2050 et 2100 permet d’illustrer le devenir de cette langue, notamment, l’importance de l’apprentissage du basque par les immigrants.
