La réussite des élèves en résolution de problèmes écrits a souvent été associée aux compétences en lecture. En ce sens, il importe de comprendre comment les habiletés liées à la lecture peuvent s’articuler pour permettre l’apprentissage de la résolution de problèmes écrits. L’objectif de recherche consiste à vérifier l’influence de deux habiletés en lecture sur le rendement en résolution de problèmes écrits de mathématiques d’élèves du troisième cycle du primaire. À cette fin, nous avons utilisé un devis quantitatif s’inscrivant dans les études corrélationnelles prédictives. Les 176 élèves ayant participé à l’étude ont réalisé deux épreuves de compréhension en lecture se traduisant par la lecture d’un texte narratif et d’un texte informatif auxquels était rattachée une série de dix questions, soit cinq questions de repérage et cinq questions d’inférence. Les participants ont aussi résolu un ensemble de six problèmes écrits de mathématiques. Les résultats des analyses de régression linéaires effectuées soutiennent que la compréhension aux questions d’inférence représente l’habileté spécifique en lecture qui est la plus liée au rendement en résolution de problèmes écrits. Ces résultats nous amènent à mettre en évidence l’importance de développer l’habileté à émettre des inférences à l’école.
