Abstract
Traffic management schemes are required to reduce congestion in Southeast London, UK. A SELTRANS (South East London Transport Strategy) travel plan scheme that used psychological research as part of its approach is described. A survey was conducted of a representative cross section of the public in Southeast London boroughs. It showed that 9.9% of respondents believed buses were for lower income groups, 27.4% said that friends and family did not use the bus and 7.2% said that there was a stigma attached to bus use. Males, residents living in greener, affluent boroughs and 45 to 64-year olds related the most stigma to bus use. Almost a quarter agreed a bus just for business commuters would be effective. Drivers were questioned about their attitudes to cyclists. Almost a third expressed admiration for cyclists and only 10% expressed sympathy. Some groups were aware of their contribution to negative environmental impacts, but were unwilling to take any personal responsibility or change their behaviour.
