Abstract
Les inégalités sociales devant la mort et la santé persistent toujours au Canada en 1991 malgré l'espérance de vie très élevée dontjouissent les Canadiens et Canadiennes et malgré l'accès universel aux soins de santé. Cet article présente l'espérance de vie totale et en santé à 30 ans selon le sexe en fonction de l'état matrimonial et de deux variables définissant le statut socio-économique : le niveau d'éducation et le niveau de revenu du ménage. On y montre que : 1) il existe un gradient relativement important d'espérance de vie entre états matrimoniaux, niveaux d'éducation et niveaux de revenu, 2) ce gradient est toujours plus élevé chez les hommes que chez les femmes, 3) l'ajustement pour la santé l'accentue, et davantage pour les femmes que pour les hommes, 4) les différences de mortalité et de santé entre les hommes et les femmes se réduisent généralement à mesure que le statut socio-économique s'accroît. R est donc possible de réaliser encore d'énormes progrès dans la santé et la mortalité, non pas en accroissant la technologie médicale, mais en agissant sur les déterminants sociaux de la santé.
