Abstract
Este artículo considera la relación entre la trata y el trabajo sexual en el contexto centroamericano, enfocado particularmente en el caso de Costa Rica. Aun si la preocupación por la trata viene del deseo de ayudar a las mujeres, en la práctica esta funciona como una forma de controlar la migración femenina. Ese proceso depende de una construcción de las mujeres como víctimas en vez de agentes activas, una idea que tiene una larga historia particularmente en relación con las trabajadoras sexuales. El artículo considera por qué hay tanto interés en la trata de mujeres ahora, por qué surge tanta preocupación sobre la conexión entre la migración y la sexualidad, y cómo se combinan los temas de trabajo sexual, trata, y el control migratorio de las mujeres de manera bastante compleja.
