Cette étude présente une analyse des problèmes concernant l'énergie et l'environnement aux États-Unis du point de vue de trots théories contradictoires sur la technologie : dure, douce et moyenne. On y discute aussi des mouvements sociaux (par ex. touchant l'environnement, les consommateurs ou l'énergie nucléaire) qui contestent la validité des technologies dures. On y présente également les prémisses du déterminisme technologique implicites dans la thèse sur la technologie douce. Enfin, on propose l'adoption de la technologie moyenne, soit une forme de technologie relativement restreinte, mais à haut rendement, comme solution non déterministe pour remplacer les technologies dures ou douces.
