Il est désormais commun pour les grandes villes de jouer la carte de l’aménagement urbain à travers de grands projets qui se posent comme autant de façons de faire le marketing de la ville. Ce faisant, le discours associé à ces projets table autant sur les particularités locales que sur le marché global. Montréal est partie prenante de cette dynamique. Cet article aborde les transformations du Quartier des spectacles de Montréal sous l’angle de la mémoire urbaine et des espaces thématiques. Ces deux axes permettent d’interpréter les positions relatives des groupes sociaux impliqués dans ce grand projet urbain. Plus spécifiquement, il s’intéresse à l’intersection du boulevard Saint-Laurent et de la rue Sainte-Catherine, où se trouvent les projets immobiliers d’un important promoteur. C’est un secteur emblématique de la métropole québécoise aussi connu comme le Red Light. Entre la municipalité, le promoteur et les citadins recrutés dans le cadre d’ateliers de discussion et d’entrevues, il appert que l’on puise à même des mémoires urbaines différentes pour définir autant de Red Lights.
