Dans ce texte synthétique reprenant deux courts chapitres publiés en allemand en 1995, Ulrich Beck présente quelques-uns des concepts essentiels sur lesquels il appuie sa lecture de la société contemporaine et, en particulier, la notion de « modernisation reflexive », qu'il partage avec Anthony Giddens. Selon Beck, les trente dernières années ont été marquées par un processus continu de détraditionalisation. Avec ce processus, plusieurs des clefs de voûte de la société industrielle se sont dissoutes : partage des rôles des sexes, famille nucléaire, classes sociales. Ces catégories qui permettaient d'orienter les trajectoires sociales et de définir les positions dans la société industrielle, mais aussi qui étaient relayées par les institutions, n'organisent plus les trajectoires individualisées. La biographie normalisée devient une biographie choisie. Nous vivons désormais dans une société sans classe, mais gorgée d'inégalités sociales, une société où s'érodent les fondements existentiels des institutions et des formes de consensus qui les ont portées. Ces transformations ont aussi des conséquences majeures pour les formes de mobilisation et d'expression politique. Beck aborde cette question dans un second temps, en évoquant la question des solidarités dans les sociétés modernes avancées.
