Abstract
Some features of effective parenting are outlined. First, it is argued that good parenting is multifaceted. Parents operate in different ways and each of these ways results in different outcomes: There is no one single way to parent effectively. Second, it is noted that children perceive the same form of parenting differently, depending on variables such as their developmental status, their sex, and the cultural context in which they operate. One particularly important moderator of parenting practices is temperament. To be effective, then, parents must be knowledgeable about the meaning that their children assign to their interventions.
