Abstract
Cet essai est une tentative d'application de la théorie de la légitimité de Weber. L'hypothèse proposée soutient que la légitimité d'une démocratie serait fondée sur une croyance en l'autorité de la loi, croyance qui transformerait en loyauté à la démocratie les sentiments de mécontentement des classes inférieures. L'opposition à de Gaulle en 1962 est prise comme indice de loyauté à la démocratie. Plus un parti est à gauche, plus ceux qui le soutiennent dans une élection sont opposés à de Gaulle. Cette différence entre les partis est déterminée par l'intensité avec laquelle ceux-ci amènent leurs partisans respectifs à désirer un gouvernement centré sur les partis. Ce faisant, les partis de gauche transforment le mécontentement des classes inférieures en loyauté à la démocratie. Le désir d'un gouvernement centré sur les partis n'exprime une opposition à de Gaulle que lorsqu'il est conjugué avec la conviction que ses actes sont inconstitutionnels. Le mécontentement des classes inférieures se traduit donc en une loyauté à la démocratie grâce à une croyance en l'autorité de la loi.
