Ce travail est d'abord une belle monographie d'habitation, dans la lignée des travaux de Gabriel Debien, de François Girod, de Jacques De Cauna, de Bernard Foubert, entre autres.L'importance des habitations dont il est ici question, Les Manquets et Breda du Haut-du-Cap, doit toutefois être soulignée d'emblée, non seulement en raison de leur étendue, mais encore en raison des leur notoriété.Avant d'adjoindre « Louverture » à son nom, Toussaint était connu comme « Toussaint-Breda » car il avait été esclave domestique sur l'Habitation du même nom, et a conservé des relations tant avec son ancien procureur, Bayon de Libertat, qu'avec son propriétaire, le comte de Noé.
