La forêt guyanaise est un écosystème extrêmement complexe, au patrimoine floristique et faunistique d’une grande diversité. Pendant longtemps, l’exploitation des ressources de et dans l’écosystème était insignifiante et n’avait jamais été pensée dans un cadre de développement durable. Toutefois, la population ayant triplée en une trentaine d’années, passant de 73 000 habitants en 1982 à plus de 220 000 aujourd’hui, la pression des activités humaines sur le milieu forestier est devenue significative, par la production de bois, la chasse, la cueillette, l’agriculture, l’utilisation de la biomasse à des fins énergétiques ou encore l’exploitation aurifère. Les risques environnementaux menacent donc la biodiversité de ce milieu. La prise de conscience de cette situation potentielle a conduit les pouvoirs publics à prendre, dans un contexte international favorable, un certain nombre de mesures en matière de réglementation et de gestion durable et surtout de mise en place d’un réseau d’espaces naturels protégés, dont un récent parc national, le Parc amazonien de Guyane.
