Abstract
The design of RCC (roller compacted concrete) deck slabs for road bridges in India is dictated by considerations of local bending, even though the failure mode of such slabs under concentrated or wheel loads is due to punching shear. This is due to the development of an arching action when the material of the deck is weaker in tension than in compression. The design of slab-on girder bridges is discussed with reference to the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code of Canada and adoption of this code with suitable modification to take into account the ground realities of India is suggested.
