The chapter analyzes the performance of several multiplexing and random access techniques by means of an imbedded Markov chain technique under the assumption that messages arrive at a Poisson rate, either simple or compound. In the first part of the chapter Time Division Multiplexing is studied with the objective of deriving expressions for average delay and buffer overflow, as appropriate. The cases under study are asynchronous and synchronous TDM for finite and infinite buffer. The use of the probability generating function as an analytical tool is introduced. In the second part of the chapter, the basic random access techniques, pure and slotted ALOHA are presented. Simple expressions for the throughput of both schemes are derived. In the final section, the imbedded Markov chain technique is used to find the average delay for slotted ALOHA.
