Abstract
En 1856, el médico y naturalista alemán Karl Hoffmann fungió como el principal cirujano del ejército de Costa Rica en la guerra contra los filibusteros esclavistas, comandados por William Walker. El estrés de sus labores de atención de los heridos y los afectados por la epidemia del cólera morbus que sobrevino, le deterioró la salud de manera crónica, al punto de provocar su muerte en 1859, en Puntarenas. Enterrado en Esparza, su tumba permaneció en el abandono por 70 años. En 1929 sus restos fueron exhumados, trasladados a San José y enterrados con honores de General de Brigada. Además de resaltar los méritos de Hoffmann para recibir ese tributo, en este artículo se analiza en detalle la cobertura periodística de ese evento.
