El objetivo investigador ha sido abordar la situación del movimiento sindical. Se ha tomado como referencia el estudio de la trayectoria de ELA, contrastándola con otras prácticas que corresponden, tanto a Estados nación —Europa Occidental—, como a Naciones sin Estado —Québec—. Se quiere dar cuenta: de una doble transición de ELA, la que tiene que ver con el modelo de sociedad —de un sindicalismo de corte institucional a otro de contrapoder— y la relacionada con la cuestión nacional —del estatutismo al soberanismo—.Para ello importa observar el recorrido realizado por esta organización, incluyendo los impactos, a partir de ese momento hasta la actualidad.El modelo sindical resultante cabe identificarlo como el correspondiente a un Sindicalismo Combativo. Este término es utilizado para referirse al sindicalismo quebecios por la centralidad que ocupa, en su intervención colectiva, la acción reivindicativa. En el caso de ELA, destaca, también, la sistemática presencia de la lucha sindical que ha desplazado y reemplazado a la práctica institucional como herramienta para defender los derechos y demandas de los y las trabajadores/as.
