Abstract
Cet article évoque la vie de Lalia Halfkenny (1870-1897), la première personne noire connue des Maritimes à avoir obtenu un diplôme d’un établissement d’enseignement postsecondaire de la région (l’Acadia Ladies’ College, en 1889). Il s’intéresse particulièrement au parcours de Halfkenny qui, après avoir connu l’illégitimité et la pauvreté dans la région, atteignit la respectabilité et la sécurité en tant que professeure de diction dans un établissement pour femmes noires de Richmond, en Virginie. Ce faisant, l’article traite aussi de l’expérience d’autres pionniers parmi les premiers Noirs diplômés et éducateurs des Maritimes, en mettant l’accent sur les difficultés qu’ils rencontrèrent pour obtenir un emploi satisfaisant dans leur localité et leur province, de même que sur les conséquences qui en résultèrent pour les autres Noirs des Maritimes (qui n’eurent pas la possibilité de bénéficier de leur contribution).
