Abstract
Lorsque l’on évoque la relation du général de Gaulle avec le Canada, on serait tenté d’évoquer son fameux « Vive le Québec Libre » lancé du balcon de l’Hôtel de Ville de Montréal un jour de juillet 1967. Mais ce serait oublier que cette relation, pour passionnelle qu’elle ait été, ne fut pas toujours conflictuelle. Lors de ces visites triomphales au Canada, en 1944, puis en 1945, de Gaulle fut d’ailleurs bien obligé de souligner le soutien du Canada à la France libre dès le début de 1941, alors même qu’Ottawa continuait d’entretenir des relations officielles avec le régime de Vichy. À partir de novembre 1942, le Canada intervint régulièrement, à la mesure des ses moyens, pour que la France soit réintégrée au sein du concert des grandes puissances.
