Abstract
Le gouvernement de l'insécurité sociale est au cœur des actes de l'État-providence contemporain. Or il n'y pas un État providentiel, mais des États providentiels. L'article tente de cerner ce qui fait varier ainsi les trajectoires de l'État-providence entre 1930 et 1975. Deux types d'approche sont examinés. D'une part, l'approche sociocentri-que, qui fait de la question sociale le nœud organisateur de l'État-providence. On aborde ainsi le problème central de l'insécurité sociale associée à la généralisation du salariat. D'autre part, une approche politico-institutionnelle qui place le pouvoir et la gouvernementalité au cœur des processus qui font advenir l'État-providence. Cette seconde approche, privilégiée par l'auteur, conduit à loger le politique au carrefour de l'institution des régimes de protection sociale.
