Jonathan D. Ablard reconstruye la historia de los hospitales psiquiátricos públicos en la Argentina a lo largo de un siglo.Su recorrido se basa en las trayectorias de los hospitales más grandes y con archivos más completos, los actuales Hospital J. T. Borda y Braulio A. Moyano.La obra analiza distintos aspectos del sistema psiquiátrico: las condiciones generales de los hospitales en cada período (cantidad y origen de sus fondos, normativa que rige la actividad), las ideas de los psiquiatras a cargo (importancia de su disciplina para la sociedad, características de las enfermedades mentales, tratamientos propuestos) y la experiencia de los pacientes y sus familias (especialmente sus estrategias para influir en decisiones sobre la internación).
