Abstract
Avec l’expansion coloniale européenne et le développement de nouvelles routes commerciales transcontinentales et maritimes au XVIe siècle, le vin conquiert de nouveaux espaces géographiques et sociaux. Avant le contact européen, le vin est un produit culturel inconnu au Canada. La présence de vignes canadiennes qui croissent à l’état sauvage suscite beaucoup d’espoirs et semble confirmer que le Nouveau Monde est une terre d’abondance. Les lambrusques locales n’atteignent cependant pas les critères de qualité auxquels les Français s’attendent : en dépit des soins, elles ne produisent qu’un vin médiocre. L’acclimatation de vignes françaises est tentée, dans l’espoir de parvenir à implanter ce symbole civilisateur en terre de colonisation, mais l’expérience fonctionne mal en raison du climat rigoureux. Puisque les espoirs vinicoles coloniaux sont voués à l’échec, l’importation s’avère nécessaire. En définitive, la consommation de vin permet d’affirmer et de confirmer son identité française.
