Abstract
Abstract The Spanish Netherlands was the biggest theater of the Nine Years' War (1688–1697) and siege was the most common operation there. Louis XIV's armies generally thrust northwest following the general line of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. Namur nestled strategically at their confluence. The French took it in 1692 and lost it in 1695. Indeed, the Allied recapture amounted to the biggest operation of the war when, towards the end, about a quarter of a million men lay within two hours' march of the town.
